What is Academic Mentoring?

A trusted caring adult volunteers one-on-one time with their mentee using Be A Mentor’s Virtual Mentoring Platform.

Mentors focus on goal setting, homework help, and career exploration. While there may be a focus on homework help in the meetings, these sessions are more than just tutoring. Mentees form a personal relationship with their mentor to build resilience, social engagement, and a support network.

Virtual mentoring removes barriers of distance, requires no commute time, and can offer a flexible schedule.

BECOME A MENTOR

We need your special skills and perspective to show a young person what opportunities they have and give them the confidence to work towards big goals.

The COVID-19 Pandemic has exacerbated many of the issues that youth were facing before the pandemic.

Now youth are dealing with:

  • Isolation
  • Anxiety
  • Falling behind in their studies
  • Low self esteem
  • Disbelief in a positive future

12% of high school dropouts are unemployed (more than twice the national average).

Academic Mentoring is life changing for youth.

Mentors Provide:

  • One-on-one attention
  • Study skills
  • Academic support
  • Goal setting
  • Encouragement for success

Mentees:

  • Learn resilience
  • Gain self-confidence
  • Set bigger and bigger goals
  • Graduate High School and Complete Post-Secondary Education
  • Become successful, contributing, adult citizens

To volunteer to become a mentor, you will need to pass a background check, provide proof of identity, attend an online training, and fill out a profile of your skills and experience. Parents of mentees will choose mentors that match their child’s needs based on time availability, skills, and more.

Because Academic Mentoring is entirely online you can do it from anywhere that you have an internet connection.
