West Contra Costa Unified School District
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the process to register a parent or community volunteer?
Be A Mentor, Inc. is contracted by WCCUSD for volunteer application processing and for background clearances.
Find all Volunteer Information at www.beamentor.org/now .
What do I do when I arrive at the school site?
What do I do if I can’t make a scheduled
volunteer time?
Do parents need to register as volunteers?
Yes, all parents who wish to volunteer will need to
complete the process leading to obtaining a photo ID badge. Typical volunteer
opportunities at WCCUSD may include: overnight field trip chaperon, library
support, classroom support, enrichment and yard support.
Do field trip chaperons require clearance in addition to the field trip packet provided at school site?
Volunteers
attending day and overnight field trips are required to get fingerprint
clearance.
Do I need to register with WCCUSD if I plan to volunteer in an outside organization with a program at an WCCUSD school site?
If you are planning to register and volunteer through an
outside/partnering organization you will follow the outside organization’s
process that is approved by WCCUSD to obtain a photo ID badge for access to the
school site.
How long does it take to complete volunteer processing steps?
The entire process may be as short as one week and as
long as six weeks. TB results take 3 days to be read. The fingerprint results
can take up to 6 weeks.
It is recommended that schools plan accordingly for
any annual overnight fieldtrips or projects requiring the clearance of
volunteers.
Do I need to
be fingerprinted if I am an employee of WCCUSD or a retired employee of
WCCUSD?
If you are current employee of WCCUSD, you will not be
required to complete the online application to be a volunteer. If you are a
retired employee of WCCUSD you will be required to undergo fingerprinting and TB
Screening.
Do I need to
be fingerprinted if I am a volunteer or employee of another government agency or
outside organization?
Agencies are not allowed to share the confidential
information obtained from a background clearance. WCCUSD is liable for all
volunteers registered through the district and must request a new background
clearance for their own volunteers. So for example if you work for or
were previously employed by places like but not limited to
Contra Costa County, Contra Costa or Peralta Colleges, or Oakland Unified School District
you still require fingerprinting with WCCUSD.
How often do
I need to renew my tb results and get fingerprinted?
New volunteers must submit proof of negative TB results
within the last year and returning volunteers must submit proof of negative
TB results every 4 years. Volunteers who continue volunteering will
not be required to be re-fingerprinted.
However, volunteer activities may be suspended or revoked based on a subsequent
arrest notification that alters the background clearance.
If you experience a problem or are
dissatisfied with your volunteer assignment, please speak with your school site
contact or WCCUSD’s Community Engagement Office right away. It’s our job
to make sure that you are satisfied with the way you are donating your valuable
time, and your feedback is invaluable to us.
